Never watched a baseball game before, have ya skipper?
It's a natural reflex for a catcher to close his mitt as if he is actually catching the ball. The ball goes from the pitcher to the catcher in less than half a second, not nearly enough time to determine if the ball has been hit by the batter or not, so your brain simply decides to catch air in the assumption that the ball will be there.
The catcher would have done the exact same thing if the batter had fouled the ball off, hit a single, or smashed a homerun...or in this case, if the pitch happened to completely obliterate one rather unlucky bird.
And ignoring everything I just wrote, this video was all over the sports shows for weeks after it happened because it was just so insane. I probably saw it at least a dozen times without even trying. I mean damn, a 2 second Google search would return all of the proof you would ever need.

I was at that game down at Tucson Electric Park. It happened. Took a while for all of us to figure out what happened. What was funny, was no one wanted to go get the ball or the bird. They halted the game for about five minutes.

I just realized the reaction time of the batter, nigh zero with stopping the swing. WOW.
Distarawack on Aug 16th, 2011, 6:41 PM
