If you notice, after it sparks, the lines going down are "plasma" which is created JUST before the lightning strikes, the first one to touch an object like a lightning rod, or tree or ground anything really, thats the one it will travel down
Very cool to see it actually happen.

It's negatively-charged ions called "leaders", plasma is the result of the extreme temps, thunder is the result of the temperatures burning the air and creating a vacuum which air rushes back in to fill - creating the BOOM. Like doing a canonball into a pool

Now you know why lightning makes that rippling sound when it goes off. Whompa Whompa Whompa WHOMPA WHOMPA KABOOM! Well, I'm sure there's better words to use but you know what I mean. Awesome.

FAKE ???

This is really educational. I never realized this happened right before a lightning strike. And the first one to touch the ground is the path the actual bolt will take. Very awesome.

Actually lightening strikes happen from the ground upwards. They don't come down, they go up from the ground.

And you can see it on the gif. The ionization starts from the clouds, but when the channel reaches the ground, a return stroke occurs and that return stroke, being much more powerful than the original leading stroke, is visible as the lightning strike.
Ben on Sep 20th, 2011, 9:08 PM
The reason why that is, is because the clouds are positively charged and the ground is negatively charged. To balance out the electrons (which are responsible for the negative charge) discharge from the ground up.
